Internationalization

LASIGE strategically seeks high international impact and dissemination of research output by addressing state-of-the-art worldwide research themes, by collaborating with other international research institutions and companies, and by publishing in high quality venues.

LASIGE has been observing a consolidated growth and a marked improvement in the quality of its research and its internationalization. These are confirmed by qualitative and quantitative performance and efficiency metrics, which have been confirmed by independent entities, such as the Portuguese main research funding agency (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia). For instance, on the specific program to promote internationalization (“Programa Incentivo 2014” - Incentivo/EEI/UI0408/ 2014 ), LASIGE was ranked as 4th (fourth) on what concerns financing per FTE, in a universe of 318 Portuguese research units in all scientific areas.

Below, we present some example areas where we have been actively collaborating internationally, giving a special emphasis to short stays, either by LASIGE members that go abroad e by colleagues that come to visit us, and organizations with whom we are cooperating in the context of projects. Other areas of collaboration can be observed in other parts of the LASIGE site.

# Research Cooperation

LASIGE members have traditionally cooperated with other international investigators on very diverse areas of knowledge. This is translated by a large number of activities where LASIGE members are involved in each year. These include the following:

  • The organization of invited distinguished seminars that are hosted at LASIGE or are presented in the context of workshops / conferences chaired by LASIGE members;
  • Participation in evaluation processes, either as reviewers or panelists, for instance in the context of European project evaluations or in international program committees (acting as PC members or reviewers of journals);
  • On the creation of transnational shared research infrastructures, such as in the creation of worldwide computing and networking platforms;
  • Numerous papers have resulted from these collaborative efforts, which are usually published in highly recognized international journals and conferences.
